International Academic Forum Heidelberg Conferences
The International Science Forum Heidelberg holds approximately 70 conferences each year. Scientific conferences can take many forms: workshops, colloquia, symposia, retreats, etc. They can last several days, a few hours, or just an evening.
The Board of Trustees and the management of the IWH reserve the right to award the title of IWH Symposium to individual events on behalf of Heidelberg University. These events then receive special service and are given particular prominence.
IWH symposia are considered events of Heidelberg University and are not regarded as events of individual institutes or persons. Naturally, responsibility for the scientific content remains in the hands of the individual organizer.
All other events that are not designated as “IWH Symposium” are events that are held on the premises of the IWH under the full responsibility of institutes or institutions, as well as individual members of Heidelberg University or other scientific institutions.

Symposia
The IWH symposia are events organized by Heidelberg University. The following criteria must be observed when applying to the IWH symposium program:
- High scientific standard of the project
- International group of participants
- Balanced proportion of participants from Heidelberg University and other institutions
- Sufficient active participation of young scientists (approx. 20%)
Full-time professors at Heidelberg University, emeritus professors, honorary professors, and habilitated scientists at the university are eligible to apply.
The decision-making committee
The Scientific Director of the IWH decides on admission to the symposium program.
Hengstberger Symposia
Hengstberger symposia occupy a special position: every year, young scientists from Ruprecht Karls University hold these symposia at the IWH. They finance these events with prize money (€15,000) from the Klaus-Georg and Sigrid Hengstberger Prize, which enables them to invite their international colleagues to the IWH for an intensive exchange of ideas. Three prizes are usually awarded each year. The IWH Board of Trustees selects the winners together with the founder Klaus-Georg Hengstberger. The deadline for this award for young scientists is April 1 of each year. The prize is open to all scientific fields, including the natural sciences and medicine as well as the humanities and social sciences.
Colloquia and other events
Colloquia and other events at the IWH are events that are held on the premises of the IWH under the full responsibility of institutes or institutions, as well as individual members of the teaching staff of Heidelberg University or other universities. They are not considered IWH events and are not included in the official IWH event program. The IWH may therefore not be named as a co-organizer, host, or jointly responsible institution in publications, invitations, programs, etc. relating to the event. To avoid confusion with IWH symposia, the term “symposium” must not be used in connection with events at the IWH. Questions regarding the organization of an event must be coordinated with the IWH.
